Horizon debuted in September 1958 as a hardcover book of the arts, a clothbound volume with no advertising, printed on heavy stock and priced to live on a shelf rather than a newsstand. Published by the American Heritage Publishing Company under editor Joseph J. Thorndike Jr. and publisher James Parton, it set out to bring intelligent, richly illustrated coverage of the world's culture to a broad American readership.  ver its run Horizon published W. H. Auden, Saul Bellow, James Michener, Igor Stravinsky, and Carl Sagan, and in 1961 George Plimpton interviewed the painter Andrew Wyeth for its pages. Writers approached culture with essayistic depth rather than journalistic haste.  The hardcover survived into the mid-1960s before shifting to quarterly issues; by 1977, rising costs forced a move to monthly softcover that dismayed loyal subscribers. In 1978 the magazine was sold and relocated from New York to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, under editor-publisher Gray D. Boone. Horizon ceased publication in 1989.
