HAROLD BARNARD ZOOK, FAIA (1920-2016)

Zook was born in Chicago, the only child of noted Chicago architect R. Harold Zook and Mildred Belle Barnard. He completed Cornell University’s five-year Beaux Arts program in four years, graduating in 1941 with a medal for his thesis. After WWII service in the Navy, Zook moved to Palm Springs CA in 1946 to work for Albert Frey’s firm, Clark and Frey. In 1947 he relocated to Pasadena, briefly partnering with Harold Bissner, before opening his own office in 1948.  Zook’s early Pasadena work consisted of modest, affordable houses with multi-functional built-ins, steel construction, redwood, combed plywood, and walls of glass that created carefully sited indoor/outdoor relationships. Several of his houses were featured in Architectural Record and Arts and Architecture, many photographed by Julius Shulman. Zook-designed residences appeared at least 20 times in Margaret Stovall’s Home of the Week column for the Pasadena Star-News. He designed six of the seven houses on Pasadena’s Mesita Road, the world’s highest concentration of custom-built Zook residences and as of 2026 under consideration as a Pasadena historic district. Major commercial works in Pasadena include the Pasadena Civil Defense Center, the Saga Motor Hotel, and Gwinn’s Drive-In restaurant. Three Zook houses are Pasadena historic landmarks: the 1950 Bryant Myers house, the 1957 Welsh house, and Zook’s own 1951 Mesita Road residence. In 1962 he moved his office to Corona del Mar, initially sharing space with architect Richard Pleger. After that only a few of Zook's designs were Modernist; clients generally wanted Spanish or colonial styles. Many thanks to Aaron and Melinda Kiely for extensive research and photos.

Judd, a wealthy Pasadena bond executive and socialite pianist, lived a quiet day life and a hard-drinking, secretive night life. On January 29, 1948, his daughter found him dead in bed—stabbed with a fork and butcher knife, likely strangled, his watch and cash stolen. Judd had met 19-year-old transient Edgar Bentley at a Los Angeles tavern; Bentley visited his home three times, the last ending in a drunken struggle and Judd's death. Arrested months later, Bentley pawned the stolen watch, confessed, and ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, receiving five years to life.
