STANLEY TIGERMAN, FAIA (1930-2019)

Tigerman was born and raised in Chicago IL, growing up in his paternal grandparents’ boardinghouse in Edgewater. He studied at MIT but left after one year, then apprenticed with Chicago modernist George Fred Keck before serving four years in the Navy during the Korean War. Admitted to Yale by Paul Rudolph despite lacking a bachelor’s degree, Tigerman earned his Masters in 1961 and established his own practice. From 1964 until his retirement in 2017, Tigerman was principal of Stanley Tigerman and Associates Ltd., later Tigerman McCurry Architects, founded with his wife Margaret McCurry in 1982. He is credited with more than 450 design projects and 175 built works. He served as director of the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Architecture from 1988–1993.

Tigerman, Stuart Cohen, Larry Booth and Ben Weese were fed up with the stranglehold that followers of Mies van der Rohe had on Chicago architecture. When a major exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art ignored everyone but Mies and his disciples, the four mounted a rival show in the Time-Life Building that went national. Soon joined by James Ingo Freed, Tom Beeby and James Nagle, they became the Chicago Seven — a name borrowed from 1969 Chicago anti-Vietnam War protesters. The group became leaders in post-modernism through teaching, exhibitions and debate, seeking new forms and meaning in their buildings. A 1978 collaboration with Helmut Jahn produced variations on the Chicago townhouse. The group eventually grew to include Gerald Horn, Kenneth Schroeder and Cynthia Weese — though members "didn't agree on anything," according to Beeby. In 2005 the Chicago Architectural Club held a 25th anniversary reunion at the Museum of Contemporary Art but Tigerman was not there. His archives are held at Yale and the Art Institute of Chicago.
