MOSHE SAFDIE (1938-)

Safdie was born in Israel. His McGill Univerisity thesis asked - how do you bring the qualities of a single-family home — private outdoor space, natural light, a sense of community — to high-density urban housing?  That question drove his most acclaimed project, Habitat 67, built for Montreal's Expo 67. The complex stacks 354 prefabricated concrete modules into 146 interlocking dwellings, each with its own garden terrace. Safdie and his family moved in upon completion.   He spent the following decades testing variations on the same idea at larger scales and in new markets: Esplanade Condominiums (Cambridge MA, 1989) and Cairnhill Road Condominiums (Singapore, 2003); Sky Habitat (Singapore, 2012); Eling Residences (Chongqing, 2017) and Habitat Qinhuangdao (2017); Monde (Toronto, 2019), Serena del Mar (Cartagena, 2021), and Altair (Colombo, 2021).  Safdie established his firm in Montreal in 1964; it moved to Somerville, Massachusetts, with offices in Jerusalem, Toronto, Shanghai, and Singapore. He received the AIA Gold Medal in 2015 and the Wolf Prize in Architecture in 2019.

Safdie married his first wife, Nina Nusynowicz, in 1959. The couple had a daughter, Taal, in 1961, and a son, Oren, in 1965. His son Oren is a playwright, based in California and Canada. His daughter Taal is an architect in San Diego, and partner of Safdie Rabines Architects. In 1981, Safdie married Michal Ronnen, a photographer, with whom he has two daughters, Carmelle and Yasmin.
