THOMAS (THOM) MAYNE FAIA (1944- )


Thom Mayne, born in Waterbury CT.  He studied architecture at the University of Southern California, graduating in 1968, and began his career working as an urban planner under Ki Suh Park. In 1972 Mayne left his teaching post at Cal Poly Pomona amid a dispute between the Dean and Ray Kappe, who ran the architecture department. With five other students and educators, he co-founded the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).  Mayne co-founded Morphosis Architects that same year; Michael Rotondi joined in 1975. Mayne took a year away to earn a Master of Architecture from Harvard's Graduate School of Design in 1978, then returned as principal and lead designer. Morphosis became a major international practice and, through the federal Design Excellence program, a leading designer of U.S. government buildings including the San Francisco Federal Building, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters, the Wayne L. Morse Courthouse, and 41 Cooper Square. He has taught at Columbia, Harvard, Yale, UCLA, the Berlage Institute, the Bartlett, SCI-Arc and Penn.  He founded the firm Morphosis in Santa Monica in 1972 with Michael Rotondi and co-founded the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) that same year. He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2005 and the AIA Gold Medal in 2013.
