Where does New York go in the summer? It's fabulous Long Island, and USModernist dives deep into two vacation hotspots famous for their Modernist houses, the Hamptons and Fire Island!  You'll fly direct from RDU. You'll stay at the amazing TWA hotel at JFK!  You'll get event admissions, exclusive tours, a free year membership/renewal in the Mod Squad ($120 value), and much more!

SATURDAY, AUGUST 13

fOn Saturday, we fly direct from RDU to New York JFK...upon landing, lunch as we roll to ...

men in black world's fair

...the New York 1939 and 1964 World's Fair site, aka the Men In Black Towers, in Queens, including the Queens Museum.  Features a tour by the intrepid crew of volunteers that's been keeping the site alive for a decade.

The Sunken Lounge | TWA Hotel at JFK Airport

You'll stay two nights at the fabulous TWA Hotel attached to the incredible TWA Terminal designed by Eero Saarinen. After checking in, you can explore the building, then it's happy hour on us in the gorgeous lobby, above, followed by dinner on your own in the Paris Cafe restaurant, below.


SUNDAY, AUGUST 14

After breakfast on your own at the hotel, we head out with our own tour docent by private coach to the Hamptons.  Many people don’t realize it, but the East End of Long Island has one of the highest concentrations of Modernist homes in the country. Timothy Godbold, Executive Director of Hamptons 20th Century Modern, a NY 501C3 nonprofit, has organized these houses:

 The 1981 Andre Dupuis House, East Hampton NY. Designed by Harry Bates. Includes access to the gardens that feature rare Rhododendrons.

MONDAY, AUGUST 15

After an early breakfast on your own, we travel out by private coach to Fire Island, taking the Pines ferry over to meet architect Christopher Rawlins, founder and Executive Director of Pines Modern - and author of Fire Island Modernist: Horace Gifford and the Architecture of Seduction.

Chris will take us on a walking tour of pristine Modernist houses on Fire Island by architects such as Horace Gifford, Harry Bates, and Arthur Erickson. Houses are subject to change.  We'll have a late lunch on Fire Island then depart for the mainland, leaving JFK late Monday afternoon and arriving at RDU Monday night.

Almost everything's included: roundtrip JetBlue direct flight RDU-JFK, all transportation, hotel, scheduled tours and admissions; dinner Sunday night, lunches on Sunday and Monday. Plus you get a year's membership in the Mod Squad, or an extra year if you're already a member.

If you wish to fly from another city or arrange your own transportation, please register then send an email indicating that flying preference to george@usmodernist.org. You'll receive a $250 per person rebate within a week and are responsible for meeting us in the lobby of the TWA hotel at 1230pm on Saturday, August 13.  You'll be returned to TWA by 4pm Monday, August 15.


The Fine Print:

Once payment is made, there are no refunds for any reason except if the tour is completely cancelled.

Bring a mask; they will likely be required in the houses.

The itinerary and order of events are subject to change without notice or refund.

No checked luggage; one carry-on and one personal item only per person.

Participants must complete a liability release and proof of vaccination before departing as is standard with all USModernist trips.

There is NO SMOKING of any kind at the hotels or the houses, inside or within 25 feet outside.

Parking at RDU airport is not included.

Architects can get self-reported CEU hours if arranged in advance with the AIA.

There is a small but possible risk of overnight stay if flights are cancelled or delayed, in which case participants are responsible for any additional costs of meals, lodging, transportation, and incidental expenses.

Proceeds benefit USModernist's ongoing documentation, preservation, and promotion projects.
