CHARLES ALLAN HAERTLING, AIA (1928-1984)
Born in Ste. Genevieve MO, he joined the Navy after high school, serving from 1946 to 1948. Haertling graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in architecture in 1952. In 1953, Haertling moved to Boulder CO to serve on the architecture faculty of the University of Colorado, a position he would hold until 1955 and again 1965-1966. In 1957 he opened his own architectural practice in Boulder and would design over 40 buildings. From 1967-1973 he served three terms on Boulder's city council. Between 1970-1971, he was Deputy Mayor of Boulder. Haertling married Viola Brase, with whom he raised four children. He died of brain cancer.
1959 - The Joe Ben Wheat House Addition, 1515 Baseline Road, Boulder CO. Original house 1923. This was Haertlings first solo project. Sold in 2000 to Barry Vant Hull.
1958 - The Herbert Noble House, 650 Pennsylvania Avenue, Boulder CO. First complete house design. A fourteen-sided house with a thin folded-plate roof of stylized leaves composed of sixteen identical panels. Sold in c1978 to Judith Lesta-Norrie
1958 - The Marvin White House, 630 Pennsylvania Avenue, Boulder CO. Sold in 1986 to Laurie Leinonen.
1958 - The Helen Wilson House, 4247 Prado Drive, Eldorado Springs, Boulder CO. Destroyed in 2011, new house built 2013.
1958 - The Judson Pearson House, 845 Circle Drive, Boulder CO. Remodel and addition in 2015. Property shark shows a date of 1957 but the Noble house was his first house. Sold in 1995 to Julia Frances Burton.
1958 - The Charles Haertling House, 855 Circle Drive, Boulder CO. Sold in 1981 to Sue Sawyer. Sold in 2022 to BLDR143LLC. For sale in 2026.
1960 - The Hubert and Alice Knudsen House, 420 Christmas Tree Drive, Boulder CO. Sold to Victor Warren Fabrizio, who had Haertling do an undated remodel. Sold in 1990 to Deborah Byrd and Robert Presson.
1962 - The Richard Krueger House, 1025 Rosehill Drive, Boulder CO. Sold in 1992 to Dorcas McDonald.
1962 - The Willard House, 125 Belleview Drive, Boulder CO. Sold to Melvin Shapiro. Sold in 2019 to David and Janet Scott.
1962 - The Edward Smith House, 502 Cleveland Avenue, Boulder CO. Status Unknown.
1963 - The Lawson and Beverly Warburton House, Gold Hill Road, Gold Hill CO. Sold in early 1980's.
1964 - The Theodore Volsky House, 711 Willowbrook Road, Boulder CO. Sold in 1996 to Navid Saidi and Firuzeh Gharai.
1964 - The Lewis Mullen Addition, 705 Mapleton Avenue, Boulder CO. Unbuilt.
1964 - The Evans Cabin, Kings Valley, Conifer CO. Status unknown.
1965 - The Dr. Peter Albersheim House, 1440 Belleview Drive, Boulder CO. Sold in 2015 Eddy Brook. Sold in 2019 to Michael Powers and Elizabeth Gold. Kitchen has been renovated.
1965 - The Hazel Barnes and Doris Schwalbe Addition, 896 17th Street, Boulder CO. Original house designed in 1948 by Jacques Hampton. Designated a local landmark in 2009. Sold in 2009. Sold in 2012 to Katybelle LLC. Second photo is original 1948 house.
