KENNETH MACKENZIE DAY, AIA (1901-1958)

The son of one of Philadelphia's most prestigious architects, Frank Miles Day, he graduated HS from Chestnut Hill Academy, Day entered the University of Pennsylvania and received his BS in Architecture in 1922. He worked in the London office of Sir Aston Webb and with his Dad while an undergraduate, but joined Ritter & Shay upon graduation. By 1923 he had moved to New York City and was with McKim, Mead & White from 1923 to 1926. Returning to Philadelphia in 1927, he briefly joined Thomas, Martin & Kirkpatrick before partnering with Edmund Purves as Purves & Day. By 1932 this firm dissolved, and Day continued in private practice. From 1947 to 1948 he was an associate professor in Yale, and he also served as guest lecturer at Cornell.  All his life he was a respected rebel.  When he died he was President of the Pennsylvania Society of Architects.  His archives are at Penn.

"I detect some progress in honesty of expression, but a net retrograde tendency caused by vulgar materialism and an inordinate amount of time devoted to motion. The energy, time, and money once devoted to great architecture (the Pyramids, Parthenon, et al.) is devoted today to highways and to automobiles. Motion has replaced thought."  Kenneth Day
