WILLIAM GENTRY CRAWFORD, AIA (1913-1978)

Crawford was born in Brompton AL and graduated in 1936 from the Univeristy of Florida with a degree in architecture. He served in the Navy from 1943-1946, and he had a partnership with Robert M. Little from 1946 to 1953, then he went out on his own in Fort Lauderdale. Some of his buildings include the 1957 Sunrise Junior HS, the 1957 Lockhart Stadium, Coral Ridge National Bank, and the Broward National Bank Addition.


1949 - The Howard Baxter House, 1400 South Ocean Drive, Ft. Lauderdale FL. Designed while working with Robert M. Little. Won a 1949 AIA Merit Award. Either destroyed or completely remodeled and expanded in 1996, bottom photo.

1950 - The James R. Adams House, 400 San Marco Drive, Ft. Lauderdale FL. Featured in Better Homes and Gardens, February 1952. Sold in 1997 to Scc Contracting Inc. Front facade changed in the late 1990s, bottom photo.


1954 - The Ft. Lauderdale City Hall Dormitory Addition, Ft. Lauderdale FL. A 25 man dormitory for Ft. Lauderdale firemen. Status unknown.

1955 - The Broward County Courthouse Addition and Renovations. The original 1928 building (top photo, far right) had concrete mixed with beach sand and by 1955, the courthouse leaked everywhere when salt corroded the rebar. Gable, Pownall, and Gilroy did a small addition in 1949. Crawford took over all the work in 1955.


1955 - The Ray Heverling House, Coral Ridge, Ft. Lauderdale FL. Designed with Robert M. Little.


1955 - The William H. Phelps Jr. House, Caracas, Venezuela. Phelps was a well known ornithologist.


Around 1955 - The Intracoastal Construction Co. Executive Housing, Harbor Beach, Ft. Lauderdale FL. Overlooking Lake Sylvia.


1956 - The John F. Coulton House, Ft. Lauderdale FL. Overlooks a lake.

Around 1956 - The William G. Crawford Office, 220 SE 8th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale FL. Featured in Florida Architect Magazine. Destroyed.

1960 - The North District Hospital, later renamed North Broward Hospital. Featured in Modern Hospital Magazine.


1962 - The Miccosukee Tribe Restaurant, Florida.

1979 - The Ralph R. Bailey Hall, Broward College, Davie FL. There were plans for a larger opera addition but it was not built. Located next to the FLL airport, Bailey Hall required special acoustics due to the plane noise. Theatre consultant Bertram Kinsey; acoustical consultant, Harold Burris-Meyer. Renovated in 2014.
