MAX WILSON STRANG, FAIA (1970-)

Strang grew up in Winter Haven FL where his parents commissioned a home by Gene Leedy.  Strang's relationship with Leedy introduced him to the architecture of Paul Rudolph and other Florida architects.  He graduated from the University of Florida and Columbia before working for Leedy, SHoP Architects, and Zaha Hadid.  Leedy's home and studio in Winter Haven FL were acquired by Strang in 2019 and 2023 respectively; both have been restored (see entries below).  Strang founded his firm in 1998 and now practices as STRANG, with offices in Miami and Winter Haven.  Elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2016, he received the AIA Miami Silver Medal in 2013 and the AIA Florida Medal of Honor for Design in 2019; the firm was named AIA Miami Firm of the Year in 2022 and AIA Florida Firm of the Year in 2025.  Three books have been published on the office by Oscar Riera Ojeda Publishers: Environmental Modernism: The Architecture of [STRANG] (2018), Rockhouse (Masterpiece Series, 2018), and Subtropic: The Architecture of [STRANG].  Bio adapted from Wikipedia. 

2004 - The Max Strang House, aka Rock House, 4080 Douglas Road, Coconut Grove, Miami FL. Built of stone excavated from the site itself. Designed by Strang for his own family and the project most associated with the firm. Appeared in the 2006 film Miami Vice as the lair of drug lord Arcangel de Jesus Montoya. Won a 2005 AIA Florida Merit Award. Sold in 2011 to Stephanie Pictor. Sold in 2018 to Ramon Corona.

2004 - The Webb and Deanna Tanner House, 6 Brogden Court SE, Winter Haven FL. Still owned by the Tanners as of 2024.

2004 - aka Tribalhouse Residence.

 2007 - The Ruth Latterner Renovation, 3777 Pine Avenue, Coconut Grove, Miami FL.  Original house built in 1921. 

2007 - aka Kampong, 4013 South Douglas Road, Coconut Grove, Miami FL. The former home of horticulturist David Fairchild, now part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. This new 4,400 sf pavilion on the 4-acre estate is used as a multi-purpose space for exhibitions, concerts, etc. Built by NJM Builders. Won a 2007 AIA Miami Award of Merit. 2008 - The Norberto Camacho and Ryon Vasquezaka House, aka Utopia Residence, 3960 Utopia Court, Coconut Grove, Miami FL.  Won an AIA 2008 Florida Award.

2008 - The McKenna Residence. Won a 2008 AIA Miami Award of Merit.

2009 - The Stein Residence. Won a 2009 AIA Miami Award.

2009 - The Robert and Tania Bassan House, aka Five Palms, 236 Biscaya Drive, Miami Beach FL.  Sold in 2023 to the IB Mimi Trust, Noah Burton Trustee.

2016 - aka Summit Mountain. Won a 2016 AIA Miami Merit Award. Probably in Colorado, where the firm kept a Telluride satellite office. Location and status unknown.

2017 - aka Canal House, 1510 West 25th Street, Miami Beach FL.  Interiors by Michele Bonan. 12,700 sf. Sold in 2020 to Cotiva USA Corp.

2017 - Strang partnered with Gene Leedy to update 1,100-square-foot courtyard home designs. Won an AIA Florida award.  Status unknown.

2011 - The Carl Icahn House, 2535 Shelter Avenue, Miami Beach FL. Won a 2014 AIA Florida Award. Won a 2018 AIA Miami Merit Award.  Sold in 2020 to Robert Coward and Mark Bradley Jones, who transferred to a trust in 2022.  Sold in 2022 to Ari Tryson.

2017 - The Karim Masri House, aka Net Zero House, 508 West Di Lido, Miami Beach FL. Sold in 2021 to Ryan Hudson.  Features 112 solar panels estimated to power the 5,500 sf building for several months. 2020 - The Gene Leedy House Restoration, 1518 Drexel Avenue, Winter Haven FL. Original residence of Gene Leedy, built in 1957. Strang purchased the home in 2019 shortly after Leedy's death and did a careful restoration. Won a 2021 AIA Miami Award of Excellence; 2022 AIA Florida Award. Leedy's library was kept intact and the house now serves as a study center and as the venue for the Double Tee Salon Series, whose proceeds support preservation of the house and office. Available to rent as an AirBNB.

2022 - The Gene Leedy Office Restoration, 444 Avenue G NW, Winter Haven FL. Originally built in 1961, and Leedy's office for 62 years. 2022 - The Patricio and Andrea Esteruealas House, aka Wildwood Residence, 3503 Wildwood Circle, Coconut Grove FL.

2023 - Panther National, Avenir, Palm Beach Gardens FL. Commissioned 2021.  A 400-acre private golf community developed by Dominik Senn of Centaur US Holdings, for which Strang designed 218 signature and custom estate homes plus the clubhouse, lifestyle club and spa, and beach club. The Jack Nicklaus and Justin Thomas golf course opened in November 2023; the 66,000 sf clubhouse was under construction with an opening targeted for fall 2026.

Commissioned 2021.  6,084 sf with 60 feet of frontage on Biscayne Bay, a glass elevator, an 80-foot zero-edge pool, and a 3,000 sf landscaped rooftop lounge. Interiors by Dunagan Diverio Design; landscape by Enea. For sale in 2024.

2024 - The Van der Vlugt Residence, 11175 County Road 905, Key Largo FL. 5,800 sf on 2.07 acres. The living level is raised ten feet off the ground for sea level rise and storm surge, with a cluster of concrete columns supporting a 50-foot cantilever over an open-air gym and outdoor shower. Interiors by Slokkers Design; built by Tritech Construction. Won a 2024 AIA Miami Award; 2025 AIA Florida Award. 2027 - The Phillip and Susan Ragon House, aka Ocean House, 287, 291, and 299 Ocean Boulevard, Golden Beach FL.  55,200 sf on a 10-acre assemblage with 1.7 acres of Atlantic Ocean frontage, organized as three separate masses framing protected outdoor rooms, with perforated sun-shading screens. Interiors also by STRANG.  Built by Hedrick Brothers. Landscape design, Raymond Jungles.
