THOMAS (TOM) PHIFER, FAIA (1953-)
Phifer was born in Columbia SC and is best known for designing art museums, most notably the NC Museum of Art, the Glenstone Museum Expansion, and the Corning Museum. He earned a BA in architecture in 1975 and an MA in architecture in 1977, both from Clemson. He also studied at the Daniel Center for Architecture and Urban Studies in Genoa, Italy. Phifer worked for Harry Wolf in Charlotte NC for two years then moved to New York to work for Charlie Gwathmey. He has taught at the University of Texas, Cornell, Penn, Yale, and Cooper Union. 2001 - The Moyra Mulholland House, aka Taghkanic House, 223 Old Route 82, Hudson NY. Seven bedrooms and nine baths with 8,800 sf on nearly 400 acres. Commissioned 1997. Dan Kiley was the landscape architect. Won a 2008 American Architecture Award; 1999 Progressive Architecture Award. Sold in 2019. Listed for rent in 2022.
2003 - The Walter and Anita Levy House, aka Spencertown House,
274 Fire Hill Road, Spencertown NY. Commissioned 1998. Built by Quadresign. Structural engineer Guy Nordenson and Associates. Landscape architect D.I.R.T. Studio (Julie Bargmann). White-steel filigree with Catskill views. Won a 2002 AIANY Design Award; 2003 American

2007 - The Cristina Grajales and Isabelle Kirshner House, 1156 Netherwood, Salt Point NY. 9 acres, 2,150 sf.
2008 - aka Boulder House, 1035 5th Street, Boulder CO. At just over 5,000 sf, his house rests just below Boulder's Blue Line, the highest allowable elevation for construction on the slopes above the city. Sold in 2017 to Takuma Sato, the only Japanese driver to win the Indy 500.
2008 - The Scott Newman and Gregory Long House, aka Junto Farm, Poole Hill Road, Ancram NY. Set on a 200 acre site. Commissioned 1999. Landscape design by Oehme, van Sweden and starting in 2006, Peter Meyer of Raycroft Meyer.
2008 - The Thomas N. (Tom) and Virginia Whitney (Bunty) Brewster Armstrong House, aka Fishers Island House, aka Clay Point House, aka Glass House, aka Hoover Hall, aka Hooverness, 5722 Clay Point Road, Fishers Island NY. Photos by Carlos Marques. Located on the site of a 1926 family house that burned in 2003. Tod Williams and Billie Tsien were their first choice but had scheduling conflicts. 2010 - The Constance Darrow and Angelo Lombardi Apartment Renovation, aka Fifth Avenue Apartment, 1010 5th Avenue, Unit 14F, New York NY. Commissioned 2008. Renovation of 2 full-floor grand apartments, that had been subdivided into 5 smaller apartments, to one, 1500 sf one bedroom apartment. Won a 2010 AIANY Award; 2011 American Architecture Award. Structural engineer, Robert Silman.

2013 - aka Madison House, University Heights, Madison WI. Commissioned 2011. 2900sf. Designed like a serpentine garden wall. Four wings with cedar/pine floors and white walls. Designed for two professors. Project architcts: Eric Richey, John Bassett, Anja Turowski; structural engineer, Skidmore Owings & Merrill; built by Poulsen Enterprises. Status unknown.
