Environmental Design and Construction was launched in 1997 by BNP Media as a resource for architects, designers, and developers  beginning to grapple with the environmental impact of the built environment. At its inception, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) was still in its infancy, and the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system hadn't yet become a global standard.  In 2012, the magazine ended and merged with Sustainable Industries.
