The first issue was published in 1981, the result of a gift from Ruth
Thomas, who believed that the writing and narration of architecture had
an important place alongside the publication of design projects.
The founding editor, Michael Markovitz, laid out the journal's goal:
"the Journal will continually engage in critical assessment of the
present state of architectural education." Publication was
intermittent. Issue 13 is expected in 2026.
