VUKO TASHKOVICH (1938-1996)
Vuko Tashkovich was born in Skopje in the Macedonian
Republic, a constituent part of the then-Kingdom of
Yugoslavia. In January 1958, with the help of the
first U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Eleanor
Roosevelt and Yugoslavia's Marshal Josip Broz Tito, he
received permission to travel to the New York City in
January of 1958 to rejoin his father Gligor, a former
Yugoslav Senator, long-serving political party leader, and
highly-accomplished civil engineer. Tashkovich graduated
with a degree in Architecture from the College of
Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University in
1962 and worked under famed architects Eliot
Noyes,
John Johansen, and
I. M. Pei. He ultimately chose not to take the New
York State architectural licensing exam because the state
prohibited licensed architects from serving as builders. At 28, he became an entrepreneurial builder under the Original
Projects Limited name (later changing the name in the mid-1980s to Pound Ridge Contemporaries. Inc.). He would
often buy large tracts of land suitable for building and design, subdivide, build, and then sell the less-attractive
lots to fund the development of his next project. During his
30-year career, he designed and built 57 houses, 28 of which
were in Pound Ridge NY. He came under unfair criticism in
1974 from the New York State Association of Architects,
which contended that Tashkovich was "undermining the
licensing system set up to maintain high standards and
protect the public." However, Tashkovich maintained a
high-quality, ethical practice and insisted on controlling
the choice and installation of construction materials used
to create his homes thus proving the board wrong. Tashkovich
married Stefanie Lipsit, whom he met at Cornell, and they
had two sons, Gligor and Mark. Together, the family holds
six degrees from Cornell.
